What version number for Up Front with campaign integration?

I’m about to release my campaign integration into the Up Front module. Right now UF is at 3.4.8. What version number would you call it with the campaign system added? I’d added a small tweak to the entire module as well. Added mat cargo to the counter pieces so they remain attached to the cards when they are moved around. Might also add delete to the soldier cards.

Have you tried raising this with the existing maintainer(s) ?

Regardless of that, it sounds like your changes won’t be compatible with existing games even with Refresh Counters.

If users are likely to assess the module as being very different from the current version, or if the existing maintainers might do significant work in future on that version, I would go with 4.0.0 for your new release.

If the current maintainers are likely, at most, to do minor fixes to the current version and your changes are a gradual evolution of it, then I would go with 3.5.0.

I did message the listed maintainer. No response.

Not sure what you mean by not compatible with existing games. I don’t think too many people upgrade a module and then try to load a game saved in the previous version… Is that what you mean?

It doesn’t seem 4.0.0 worthy to me. Wasn’t sure.

Yes, that’s what I meant.

I think going with version 4.0.0 would make sense, especially since you’re adding a campaign system and other significant changes. Even if players don’t load old saved games, the new features might make the module feel like a different experience.

Hi. I’m not the maintainer of any of the modules listed, but I have made a few different versions based on the basic module by Tim MacCarron. I use them to play with a friend of mine in France. Reason I haven’t posted any is that it seems I’ll constantly have to struggle with this “obsolete custom code” issue. I’ve had help with fixing it earlier, but that lasted only for a short time. And I’m not sure I’m prepared to do that again several times a year… Having no knowlegde of Java-coding, it’s not a very easy thing for me without very detailled explanations of how to do it. So this is the main reason why I haven’t posted any modules and why I rarely upgrade Vassal to the newes version. I fear it will mess up my modules.
Anyway, integrating Campaign mode in the module is a great idea. And I have done that myself in several modules. However, I’m sure your way will look and be more professional. And in my opinion that change is big enough to defend using 4.0.0. It also sounds like your module contains other useful upgrades.

You will need to fix it once only. We have no plans to deprecate or remove any further functions in Vassal 3.

Ok, that sounds good. However, I did fix it once, but as soon as I ugraded Vassal to the next version the message started popping up again.

Thanks for the response. I don’t know about it looking professional. There’s probably better ways to do it. But due to what, unfortunately, seems like very little interest in Up Front these days I decided to go with something that simply works. If there’s suddenly a surge in activity and people want the “better” version maybe I’ll do that. But it’ll take having to redo how all the soldier images are being presented in the module.

Hopefully I can get it up and running here soon.

I’m ready to upload the module but haven’t found info on how to do that.

There’s a large pink box at the top of the main Modules page with a link to the How to Create a Module Page guide. In this case you wouldn’t have to create a page, but you would still want to review that page to learn about editing an existing page–crucially, the Files and Module Information section template. The guide also contains information on uploading the actual module file itself and how to link to it. Getting a new module published fundamentally has two parts: uploading the module file, and then editing/creating a page on which to link to it.

Ensuring you are logged into the wiki, any module page can be edited by clicking this icon towards the top right:

Okay but following those instructions never lead to what to do with an already existing page. In fact typing in a module that doesn’t exist doesn’t produce the ‘you’ll see the link “create this page”’ that the instructions claim will be shown.

I discovered it. The module pages of existing games have clickable “edit” next to each section. That’s what you click. This really should be part of the instructions. Not assumed someone would figure that out.

I haven’t been able to figure out what to write that will make sense to everyone in a decade of trying.

In any case, the entire module library will be replaced in a few weeks, so it’s not worth the effort to spend time updating the instructions for the old one. Sorry.
