A spammer has been attacking our wiki and tracker since yesterday evening. Unfortunately, we don’t have moderation capabilities for either of those at the moment., so I’ve had to disable editing on both. At least for the wiki the moment I reenabled editing, the attack resumed—or, rather probably never stopped, but was just rendered ineffective by disabling editing on the wiki.
The spammer attempted to spam the forum as well, but all the spam was caught in the moderation queue and binned, which I presume is why they gave up. (Seems to be not entirely automated, or if automated, does some checking on whether it’s being effective.) Ideally, the spammers would die in a fire, but short of that I’d take having moderation for new users in the wiki and tracker. I’m looking into our options presently.

I asked for some advice for the tracker in #bugzilla on irc.mozilla.org, and got the suggestion that we could set up a group into which all new bugs are put for moderation, and those bugs would be viewable only by the moderators before that. I’ve set that up in the tracker now. We’ll see how that works.

I personally don’t get it. I don’t see how something like this can serve any purpose. Any site that’s well maintained and moderated, like this one, isn’t going to let it continue and any site that doesn’t bother to keep themselves moderated is going to be far too irritating for the common user and, therefore, there isn’t going to be enough legitimate traffic paying attention to the spams on that site either. I just don’t get it. Far too much free time, I guess.

That was me. I spotted the attempted news spam when I went to post the
news item about the spam attack. They only tried that once, which makes
me think that either they have a rather sophisticated script checking
for success, or they’re doing at least some of the spamming manually.

like from the spammer’s side these days. I don’t see how it can work,
but people still do it, so…

Problem was it wouldn’t let me upload the file so approving would do no good. I tricked it by asking it to preview page and it allowed me to upload file there. I am trying to upload version 1.5.

For what it’s worth, Zhodani must have succeeded at uploading his module. A look at the module page shows NWIP version 1.5 was uploaded 8/8 and version 1.6 was uploaded 8/21.
