Grid wihere each row is offset by 1/2 rectangle width

I could swear that I saw a standard grid option that uses a rectangular grid but where each row is offset from the row below by 1/2 a rectangle width. Results in each rectangle touching the sides of 2 rectangles above, 1 left, 2 below and 1 right. Am I dreaming that this was a standard grid option?

You can achieve this result by ticking the ‘Edges are legal locations’ box
in the Grid creation dialog.

I’m wanting to end up with a board that looks a brick wall where the layers of bricks overlap instead of stacking straight up. As I understand it, the legal locations option is just for controlling piece placement.

Square grids with offset alternate rows are adjacency-equivalent to hex
grids, so you should consider placing a hex grid over your map, but have
VASSAL not draw the hexsides.

Thanks uckelman but unfortunately I need more than just adjacency-equivalency since I’m making use of the rectangles sides’ properties. Also, hexes and brick are not fully equivalent by adjacency either. While both hexes and interlocking brick allow movement from one area to 6 areas, the connections are different. With hexes each side connects to one area whereas with interlocking brick, a side can connect to 2 areas and the angles of connection are, of course, way different.

However, now I’m thinking that I need to build this map from scratch if I’m to use vassal at all in order to get the control I would need.
