Simple module question

I am just starting to try making a small module. Basically all I need is dragable pieces and a board no frills.

I tried to add a piece so I right clicked on pieces and chose “add single piece” I gave it the delete trait and chose the graphic file and name. However when I click on the pieces button in module it does not show my piece.

If I can figure out what I am missing my planned module will be a lot easier as adding pieces is most of what I want, Please help.

This sometimes happens when you create your first piece in an empty module. Try saving the module and then reopening it.

Still no luck, thanks anyway.

I will have to keep trying things though… It actually doesn’t even bring up the window that the pieces would be in, the button doesn’t seem to do anything.

Also I was wondering if why when I saved it the file type was just “file” instead of a .mod like the other modules I downloaded.

Thanks anyway

Thus spake “Pedroskivich”:

What version of VASSAL are you using?

When I do what you said you did in VASSAL 3.1.0-beta3, the piece pallete
opens with the divider all the way to the left. You can’t see any of the
pieces in it until you drag the divider rightward. (I’m not sure why it’s
this way. It should be fixed.)

Did you name it “file” or “file.mod”? If you named it “file”, it will
be called that. At present, VASSAL doesn’t add an extension for you.

Try clicking on the Game Piece Palette and add a Panel first, then add a Single Piece to the panel. You will usually need to have a Tab/Drop-down/Panel/Scollable List as the first item added to the Pallette, unless there really is only one type of piece in your game.

Ok,

My version is 3.0.17

And yes the piece area thing needs to be pulled out.

I Tried using a drop down list and I could select my piece but couldn’t drag it out like I have seen in other modules, I also tried putting the piece into a panel but I don’t see anything but some white or gray space.

Is the above version not stable or something?

Thanks for your help I am learning.

If it helps I think that my piece is there it just can’t be seen. I gave it the invisible trait and I can right click where it should be on the panel and choose invisible which means that it is there but can’t be seen. I did give it a png file to use as the graphic, is there something else I was supposed to do?

Hi,

Version 3.0.17 is quite stable and no-one else reports similiar problems. It is hard to say exactly what you are doing wrong without looking at your module. Can you post a link to your module please?

Attached

Everything is set up correctly.

Your image somehow got lost in the module upon saving. Try redefining the
image again in the basic piece trait. Worked for me with your bmp

I don’t get it, I selected it again and saved, but I still can’t see it. The inventory button says it is there.

You actually saw my BMP? I can’t. :unamused:

Has anyone had this happen to them before? Or know what to do about it?

It seems like a simple problem and it bothers me.

Thus spake “Pedroskivich”:

Can you reproduce the problem reliably? If so, please describe exactly
the steps you have to take to make the probem occur.

Turned on Vassal and chose new module.

Right clicked on the piece palette and chose single piece, or having tabs with piece on them either way.

Edited the basic piece trait with a name and linked to a jpg in the folder where I saved the module.

when I click on the pieces button there is nothing seen there. If I use a drop down list you can pick the piece but you don’t see the picture of it.

That is all, However if you use the inventory tool it says there are pieces if you drag from where there should be a piece onto your board.

Hope that helps

Thus spake “Pedroskivich”:

I followed your instructions and I can’t replicate the problem. The piece
shows up in the piece palette for me, though I do have to drag the splitter
quite far to the right before I see it. (There appears to be a problem
with recalculating the size of the piece palette when adding a new piece.)

Ok, thanks for your help, it must be my computer. And yes the palette has to be dragged but that is not really a problem.

Thanks all of you for your efforts I appreciate it!

Hurray!

My computer just got upgraded and now vassal works : )

one quick question, is there a way to make a color invisible so if I make my own pieces I they don’t have to look square?

Thanks for making such a great program, I like to make up games and I but don’t like to make cardboard pieces for them so this program is just great!

Thus spake “Pedroskivich”:

If you’re using an image editor with a reasonable feature set (e.g., the
GIMP) then you’d just cut out that color. Alternatively, you could do that
using ImageMagick for all of your pieces at once.

Thank you, and I have another question.

I found out that the reason my piece wasn’t showing was that it was too small, I don’t know why they have to be big because then they are too big anyone had this problem?

Thus spake “Pedroskivich”:

I don’t follow. Can you be more specific?
