Where to start to implement small "counter trays"?

Howdy howdy - very new to Vassal module design, so apologies in advance if this is pretty obvious. I’m looking to do an extension for the Wing Leader series that simulates what I’ve done for the paper version: create small cardstock “trays” - one per flight of aircraft - that can be placed wherever on the game board, preferably near to the actual flight counters, that hold all the various status counters. This replaces the “battle display” that is in the game, where all the counters for each side are on a separate sheet, I hate having to “look up” the info all the time.

Does Vassal have a good way to do this? Cleanly would be preferable, but any way would be better than the totally separate battle display page …

Thanks in advance!
Jeff

I have never played Wing Leader so not sure exactly what you are looking for.
In the Third World War module I made an ‘Air Combat Mat’ to drag around for each combat.
Since air can get involved.
You give the piece you want to carry others the 'Mat. trait and the markers the .Mat Cargo. trait.
You can download the TWW module and look at it in editor.

Ah yes, that looks promising. Is the state of your mat (at least the ‘cargo’) saved with game state, as well?

… um, and I can’t seem to find the Air Combat Mat at all in the v3 version of that module. Where even is it?

He’s referring to his module, which is on an entirely different module page than I think you’re looking at.

From there: open module, Markers button in the main toolbar, which opens a piece palette, go to the “Vassal” tab and pull the Air Combat Mat onto the map window.

Aha, yep, indeed I was using a different module. That works, and the state is saved with game saves. This perfect, thank you guys! Marked Jardic’s response as the solution.
